Frequently Asked Questions

Basics

  • My approach is rooted in the documentary tradition, which means I use observation as my primary skill set. I am focused on documenting what naturally unfolds in front of me, meaning I try to intervene as minimally as possible. While I may offer some gentle direction from time to time, I tend to take the backseat as my goal is for you to be fully present, without thinking about how the photos will look.

  • Someone who you resonate with, as a person and as an artist. Trust is essential to the process of making good photographs. Your photographer should be someone you feel comfortable opening up to and inviting into your life.

  • Feels like forever! I’ve been taking photos since I could hold a camera, but I’ve been a professional photographer for over 6 years.

  • I did! I took classes in traditional darkroom + printing techniques as well as documentary photography for my undergrad degree, which has been foundational to the way I view photography and my place within it. In addition to that, I have taken multiple independent photography courses through the years and regularly re-engage with them to ensure I’m always learning and deepening my craft.

  • I will offer gentle direction and guidance throughout our time shooting together as needed, but my primary goal is to photograph you as you are. If you’re looking for a photographer with a more traditional, formally posed style, I am likely not the best fit for you. I am drawn to more candid, in-between moments. I am more of a quiet, silent director type – my goal is to blend in to the background and let you be in the moment however you are experiencing it, and then to create art from that.

Services/Process

  • Yes! All session fees include the high res digital image files.

  • Yes. All of my base packages include a blend of digital & film coverage, it’s all part of my process. From there, packages can be tailored to suit exactly what you want, i.e. a higher balance of film in your final gallery or a session / wedding shot exclusively on film.

  • Great question! There are a lot of differences, but the most significant one is that film color ranges and tonal depths remain unparalleled in quality, even with the modern digital technology we have today. I shoot with both 35mm and medium format film, as well as on Polaroid. Feel free to ask me more about this so we can have a more in-depth conversation about it!

  • The same reason why we still listen to vinyl records even though we have streaming platforms, why my mother will always use a gas stove instead of electric, why I keep every handwritten letter I’ve ever gotten from someone I love. Film breathes life into photographs. Learning traditional darkroom film photography transformed the way I think about and approach photography, and now it’s something I cannot imagine setting down. I love that working with film requires me to slow down and be deliberate about every single image I take; it helps me create my very best, most intentional work.

  • Absolutely – the most simple answer is that film photography just has more overhead/operating expenses than digital photography. Each roll of film carries expenses related to analog camera gear, the cost of film itself, lab development fees, scanning equipment, and shipping. The cost of film is also always in flux, as film is not mass-produced like it used to be. When demand for film goes up, so does its price.

  • This depends on each project, but you can typically expect about 50-60 final, professionally edited high res images per hour of shooting.

  • Typically, sessions take about 3-4 weeks and weddings take about 5-6 weeks. This depends on how busy I am, though, as I prioritize delivering my best work over achieving a fast turnaround time.

  • Yes! I do my best to send sneak peeks within 72 hours of each session / wedding.

  • Yes! I take on a select number of travel jobs per year. Travel fees are calculated & quoted on a custom basis and included upfront in photography package totals to keep things as simple as possible.

  • This depends on the type of coverage, but my goal is for you to feel grounded and prepared going into your experience of being photographed. Each session / wedding booked includes a client questionnaire I will send to you over email, and I always like to go over it on a phone call as well to make sure I really understand what is important to you. For weddings, I also like to help advise and create timelines to ensure they are photography-friendly.

  • For me, photography-friendly timelines are a way of making sure there is space and time in your wedding day for you to experience & feel everything fully while also ensuring that I will have enough time to document it well – like detail shots, wedding morning traditions/rituals, first looks with family, etc. Photo timelines also build in a lot of structure to wedding days, which eases a lot of stress and uncertainty in the bigger picture. The biggest thing I like to emphasize is that photo timelines are a guide, not a rulebook.

  • Yes! This is one of my favorite parts of the entire process. Your online gallery comes with a built-in, personalized print shop offering curated products hand-chosen by me. Your gallery does not expire, so you are welcome to come back and order prints & albums any time you’d like. You’ll also receive a printing guide from me which explains all of your options in-depth, as well as how printing techniques impact the quality & longevity of your prints.

  • After you fill out an inquiry form, I’ll send over a more detailed pricing guide so you can start to get a sense of your options. We’ll talk through your vision and any questions you have either through email or a quick call, and then a signed contract & a 25% retainer will officially put your day on the books!
